The average age of a trafficked girl is 12. Most of us have heard about human trafficking, but few of us know what it actually means or looks like on the streets of Northeast Ohio. Neglect, abductions, grooming, abuse, coercion – the truth is horrifying. The state of Ohio ranks 4th highest in call volume to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.
Signs of Risk
It’s hard to even imagine that someone you love could be in the midst of being lured into sex trafficking but the threat is real. The best defense in fighting this epidemic is to become aware of some red flags that may indicate that someone is in the process of being groomed for this. The process can take months and many times we don’t recognize the red flags or we convince ourselves that it is nothing. If you suspect someone is being trafficked, please call 216-443-6085
and ask to speak to the “Human Trafficking Group.” You could save a life!
Common Red Flags
These may indicate that your loved one is being lured into sex trafficking:
(Note: These red flags apply to both boys and girls.)
+ If you notice a new tattoo that would not seem to be something they would choose. Many are being tattooed with a bar code tattoo or the name of their “boyfriend” so that they are then branded as their “property.”
+ If someone you love starts a relationship with an older boyfriend /girlfriend.
+ If you notice that the person is becoming distant from family and friends and there are indicators that the person they are in a relationship with is controlling their actions and behavior.
+ If you notice that the child is receiving expensive gifts from the person they are in a relationship with.
RAHAB is a non-profit, faith-based ministry of volunteers devoted to rescuing and restoring women who are trafficked into prostitution in Akron Ohio. The heart of RAHAB Ministries is compassion. They come alongside women who are trapped in the life-and-death struggle of prostitution and drugs. Then they stay. They refuse to see these women as different from themselves, which then allows Christ’s love to flow through them.
Shelter Care is a group home or a part of a residential center that provides temporary emergency care for children between the ages of 6 and 21 years of age . It is a short-term crisis placement for children who are threatened or alleged to be abused, neglected, or dependent.
